Two days after they had killed three persons on a single day,the Naxalites on Friday killed yet another person in Gadchiroli suspecting him to be a police informer. With this, the number of civilians killed in Gadchiroli in the past 40 days has gone up to 14,unprecedented in the history of the district.
Raju Usendi,34,a labourer from Chichola village in Dhanora tahsil, was their latest victim. He was shot dead. On Thursday,Naxals had killed Rakesh Gota and Dalsu Pada from Pipli Borgi village in Etapalli tahsil and Gunjaram Durve from Kotgul in Dhanora tahsil. Rakeshs brother is a police constable with Gadchiroli police while Dalsus was brother of a teacher.
All three were suspected by Naxals to be aiding the police against them. Police, however, have denied any links with any one of them.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (Gadchiroli range) Sunil Ramanand likens the alarming situation to trend of civilian killings by terrorists in Punjab in the 1980s. This is pure terrorism unleashed by Naxals on poor tribals whom they claim to have taken up cudgels for, Ramanand told The Indian Express.
They seem to be rattled by the fact that the police have been engaging them more in encounters now and are apparently frustrated because they feel people are getting friendlier with the administration in Gadchiroli, he said.
As many as 20 civilians were killed in Naxal violence this year.
