In its first list of 99 candidates for Maharashtra Assembly elections, the BJP declared incumbent MLA Manda Mhatre the party candidate from Belapur. Sandeep, who won from the Airoli constituency as a candidate for the undivided NCP in 2009 and 2014, had earlier declared that he would contest the elections from Belapur. In 2019, Sandeep switched to the BJP from the NCP and took a back seat in the Assembly polls.

Ganesh Naik had already said Sandeep was free to make his own decisions. He also said he would not try to stop Sandeep if he decided to leave the BJP.

The BJP announced its first list of candidates for the Maharashtra Assembly elections 2024 on Sunday. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will contest from Nagpur South West, and state BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule, who was not expected to contest, will run from Kamthi.

The Election Commission of India recently announced that the Maharashtra Assembly elections to elect 288 MLAs will occur in a single phase on November 20. The counting of votes is scheduled for November 23.
