Wake up in the morning to see natures artistry on a sun-kissed lake,go for a swim or merely sit on the shore and have tiny fish nibble your feet. Divide your day between lazing on a hammock outside your quaint, wooden cottage, stroll or cycle down earthy lanes with only green fields and silence to keep you company. At Saguna Baug,a 55-acre farm located on Mumbais doorstep, you dont have to try hard to experience nature it welcomes you as a host and remains a companion.
A unique embodiment of Gandhian principles,Saguna Baug in Neral has its inception in Vinoba Bhaves Bhoodan movement when the late Harikaka Bhadsavle,a Gandhian and freedom fighter, donated most of his ancestral land to farmers. His son Chandrashekhar later returned from the United States, bought back some land, roped in local farmers to engage in various agricultural activities and, over the years, developed Saguna Baug as a successful agro-tourism site.
In Bhadsavles words, leisure learning and fun amalgamate at Saguna Baug. Visitors are taken around fields, the bio-gas plant and fruit orchards and after a hot day,are finally brought to a lake where rides atop a buffalo beat any roller-coaster ride ever made.
We cultivate most of the food that we need to eat. Rice, vegetables and even spices are cultivated in the farm and we eat the same food that we give our guests. While women from the nearby village cook food at the Baug, their children act as tourist guides to our guests. Teenagers who have given their board exams and will soon enter the job market show the guests around as a part-time job and dont just earn money but also earn contacts. Guests often leave their professional cards behind with these kids and are usually helpful when it comes to finding them good jobs.
What sets Saguna Baug apart from a normal resort is its humble,no-frills-attached style of comfort. Its website warns guests of no air-conditioning,no television rooms and their no-nonsense style stresses that guests should understand that some animals and insects are common,a part of the farm experience. Visitors can come on a days picnic to the farm or even stay over at the dormitory, the lake house a wooden structure on stilts located in the middle of a pond or individual cottages that are given on rent. Traditional home-made Maharashtrian food is served during meals, with hosts who treat you as family rather than guests.
This is no ordinary picnic, but a chance to feel at home amid nature.
