Narwekar organises open house to discuss Malabar Hill reservoir, racecourse alterations

With the aggrieved citizens raising hue and cry over the Malabar Hill reservoir’s fate as well as alterations at the Mahalaxmi racecourse, Narwekar maintained that no construction would be undertaken at both sites without proper dialogue with the stakeholders and residents.

With Lok Sabha polls around the corner, Assembly Speaker and BJP Colaba MLA Rahul Narwekar organised an open house with city residents to address the twin issues pertaining to the reconstruction of Malabar Hill reservoir and the Mahalaxmi racecourse on Wednesday.

With the aggrieved citizens raising hue and cry over the Malabar Hill reservoir’s fate as well as alterations at the Mahalaxmi racecourse, Narwekar maintained that no construction would be undertaken at both sites without proper dialogue with the stakeholders and residents.

“The Malabar Hill reservoir and the hanging gardens have a heritage value. If there are any alterations in the existing tank structures, it will affect the area not only topographically but also affect the cultural, historical values of the city. The tank is a symbol of the city’s inclusivity. Therefore, we will not deal with the matter unilaterally and all future decisions pertaining to the tank will be taken in consultation with the stakeholders which include the local residents,” said Narwekar.

Two weeks ago, an expert committee comprising IIT Bombay professors submitted a report stating that a phase-wise repair of the tank will not be possible, which was in contradiction of the findings of the report submitted earlier by another BMC constituted committee which listed a slew of measures pertaining to maintenance of the existing tank in its present condition as well as suggested measures to carry out the repair works.

Referring to the project in limbo, Narwekar said that they would also examine the contradictory reports submitted by the BMC constituted expert committee and the IIT committee.

Meanwhile, addressing concerns on the question of the Mahalaxmi racecourse, Narwekar said that no pipelined works will change the nature of activities being undertaken at the racecourse.

“A preference should not be given to a park over a racecourse. The development works, when carried out by the BMC, will have to ensure that the existing nature of the racecourse is not altered. Furthermore, if a development work is planned, then it will be in consultation with the stakeholders including the joggers, walkers, owners of the stables etc,” he added.

One of the city’s largest open spaces, the Mahalaxmi racecourse is in for a haul as a major chunk of it is slated to be transformed into a Central Park by the BMC after the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC), the parent body that manages the racecourse, gave their nod to the civic body’s proposal.
