Exhibition on Dr Narendra Dabholkar inaugurated
Speaking after inaugurating 'We Are On Trial', an art exhibition on the slain rationalist, he also said one needs the same conviction to fight superstition, which those who hold on to superstitions possess.

(Express photo by Amit Chakravarty)A specially curated art exhibition titled ‘We are on Trial’ on the work and life of Narendra Dabholkar was inaugurated on Friday by actor Naseeruddin Shah at the Yashwantrao Chavan Centre.
“Narendra Dabholkar was one of those individuals whose footprints in the sands of time will not fade but become more evident with time,” Shah said.
The actor said he did not know Dabholkar when he was alive and was introduced to his ideologies and work after his death. “I was astonished to hear that there existed someone who considered his belief to be more precious than his own life,” he added.
The five-day exhibition, commemorating Dabholkar’s birth anniversary on November 1, has been curated by a group of people from different walks of life, who identify themselves as ‘Friends of Dabholkar’, in association with artists who are studying at the prestigious Sir JJ School of Art in Mumbai.
At the event, Dabholkar’s wife Shaila Dabholkar spoke about his willingness to fight for social reform. “He had a spirit to fight and he always sought to win,” she said.
Vidya Kulkarni, part of ‘Friends of Dabholkar’, said, “If Dabholkar was still alive and spreading his ideas, he would not be heard or tolerated — there is a huge amount of backlash to even the smallest criticism involving religion and culture.”
The event hopes to expose young artists and citizens to Dabholkar’s works and ideas.
