Its been almost three months since one of the most devastating earthquakes of recent times hit Japan. As the island nation reeled under the impact of physical destruction, rising death toll and the growing spectre of a nuclear meltdown caused by the quake and the subsequent tsunami, the world reached out to aid the distressed country. Just like the numerous concerts and shows around the world that raised money for Japan,Symphony Orchestra of India (SOI) has organised a benefit show Japan Tsunami Benefit Concert in association with the Indian Red Cross Society. It is an opportunity for us to come together in music to bond together two communities,no matter how far apart, and provide support whether in real terms or in sympathetic solidarity, says SOIs music director,Marat Bisengaliev. The concert, which will be held today at the National Centre for Performing Arts, will feature the work of eight composers, including Wolfgang Mozart,Edward Elgar,Henryk Wieniawski and Karl Jenkins. Proceeds from the ticket sales will go to the relief fund, with patrons also being invited to make additional donations towards disaster relief at the venue.
