From the next academic year (2024-25), all Mumbai University (MU) affiliated colleges will start the four-year degree courses recommended under the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020. The MU has decided to depend on the system of a cluster of colleges, where a lead college will take eight-ten colleges under it for smooth implementation.

Following approval by the academic council (AC) for course/credit structure, along with syllabus for new degree programmes, the MU on Thursday declared the plan of rolling out the NEP implementation in all the affiliated colleges, a total of 812 which are non-autonomous colleges, from the academic year 2024-25.

While the credit structure and syllabus for traditional Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Commerce (BCom.) and Bachelor of Science (BSc) are now ready, the second phase of curriculum development will focus on restructuring various professional courses offered at affiliated colleges.

The MU, along with other state universities, was asked by the higher and technical education department of Maharashtra to prepare a detailed roadmap with course structures and syllabus for non-autonomous, affiliated colleges.

Vice-chancellor of the MU, Dr Ravindra Kulkarni, said, “Looking at very large number of affiliated colleges (more than 800), lead college (normally A grade college) and cluster of colleges (eight-10 colleges under lead college) system will work for smooth implementation of six verticals under 3/4 year multidisciplinary UG (Under Graduate) degree system. Under cluster, the colleges will share their resources for teaching versatile and innovative combinations under different verticals such as minor courses, open electives, value education and co-curricular courses. This will provide real flexibility as envisaged by NEP.”

Even though NEP implementation was aimed to start in higher education this academic year, it only began with autonomous colleges and postgraduation (PG) departments of Mumbai University. Whereas, the implementation of NEP, including the beginning of four-year degree courses in non-autonomous affiliated colleges, was deferred for a year so that respective affiliating universities would get time to prepare a detailed roadmap, including credit and course structure and syllabus.
