In a first, Mumbai University has approved appointment of Professor of Practice posts in accordance with the guidelines of the University Grants Commission (UGC). This will allow the university to have individuals with industry experience work as teachers in subjects of their expertise.

The recently held meeting of the Academic Council for Mumbai University, last week; approved the decision, as per the recommendations of the committee constituted by the varsity in this regard. The committee recommended that these posts should be filled, keeping in mind the needs of emerging sectors and by identifying the necessary needs and areas in the industry by the university departments. It also insists on following guidelines of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), which entails annual review of these posts.

The Professor of Practice is a novel concept introduced by the UGC which is aimed to bridge the industry-academia gap. With great emphasis on skill-based education under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the system of Professor of Practice will allow higher education institutions to appoint individuals with considerable industry experience to teach in classrooms. On one hand, this is expected to bring practical, industry-relevant knowledge to classrooms, it is also likely to augment the faculty resource in higher education institutions.
