Mumbai, Thane & Navi Mumbai: 816 motorists booked for drunk driving on New Year eve

About 112 nakabandis were conducted and 618 isolated locations were searched during which 9,025 two-wheelers, three-wheelers, four-wheelers and other vehicles were inspected.

“During the inspection, a total of 2,410 riders were fined as per provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act for riding without helmets. Around 320 motorists were fined for wrong-side driving and another 80 were booked for rash driving,” said a Mumbai police officer.

Also, action was taken under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act against 283 motorists for driving under the influence. The Mumbai traffic department also booked 299 people for driving without seat-belt, 107 for riding triple seat and 1,119 other motorists for parking in such a manner that causes danger, obstruction and inconvenience to others.

Thane police commissionerate officers said they had deputed about 36 officers, 264 police personnel and 75 wardens. “A total of 80 places were barricaded to ensure the safety of the citizens during which 297 people were caught for driving under the influence while 299 other cases of wrong side driving, driving without helmet and rash driving etc were registered,” said a Thane police officer.

The Thane police further added they have been carrying out the special drive since December 26 during which action has been taken against 743 drunk drivers. In Navi Mumbai, 236 motorists were booked for drink driving on the intervening night of December 31 and January 1. “We took action against 309 drunk drivers between December 28 and 31,” said an officer from the Navi Mumbai Police Commissionerate.
