Mumbai: SUV rams into bike, kills pillion and injures rider

The deceased has been identified as Sahil Raut, who was sitting behind his college friend, Parth Kolvankar who resides in Mira Road.

The Jogeshwari police has arrested a 21-year-old male driver for ramming his SUV into a motorcycle, killing the pillion and seriously injuring the rider of the motorcycle.

The deceased has been identified as Sahil Raut (20), a Borivali resident, who was sitting behind his college friend, Parth Kolvankar (22) who resides in Mira Road. The college students were injured on the Western Express Highway’s JVLR flyover in the wee hours of Sunday, officials said.

According to the police, the duo was volunteering for the night watch at a Ganpati pandal in Magathane, Borivali East, till 2.30 am but had gone to Andheri to pay their respects to another Ganpati idol.

“A 21-year-old college student, Himanshu Bagla, was driving a Toyota Fortuner and had hit the motorcycle from behind. While, Kolvankar is still admitted in R N Cooper hospital, Raut was declared dead before admission. There were traffic police officials near the spot who were present moments after the incident around 4 am this past Sunday,” said a traffic official.

Bagla was booked by the Jogeshwari police under sections 304 (A) (causing death by negligence), 279 (rash and negligent driving) and 338 (causing grevious hurt by act endangering life) of the Indian Penal Code.

Police are awaiting medical reports to confirm if Bagla was driving his vehicle under the influence of alcohol.
