Mumbai Suburban Rail Network Infrastructure Upgrade: To strengthen Mumbai’s suburban rail network, Indian Railways (IR) has undertaken several initiatives, including laying new lines and increasing train frequencies.
Earlier this year, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized that infrastructure development is the cornerstone for increasing suburban services.
“Projects worth nearly Rs 17,000 crore, covering more than 300 kilometers of new lines, are currently underway at a rapid pace. These initiatives aim to decongest existing lines, improve service frequency, and cater to the ever-growing demand of Mumbai’s suburban commuters,” he said.
Now, the national transporter has planned to introduce AC local trains in 12, 15 and 18-car configurations. The Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has floated a tender for the procurement and maintenance of 2,856 AC Vande Metro coaches for the city’s suburban network.
“Procurement cum Maintenance of 2,856 Cars in configuration of 12/15/18-Car Air-Conditioned Vande Metro (Suburban) Broad Gauge Rakes with comprehensive maintenance for 35 years including setting up of two New Maintenance Depots under MUTP-III and MUTP-3A,” the MRVC said in a statement.
In March, Vaishnaw announced that the procurement of 238 air-conditioned (AC) local trains has been approved for Mumbai suburban network. “I was in Maharashtra, and during discussions with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis regarding improvements in Mumbai local trains, this matter was raised. We are pleased to announce that the procurement of 238 new local trains has finally been approved,” Vaishnaw said in Parliament.
In April, the Central Railway (CR) zone introduced 14 new air-conditioned local train services on the Main Line. These new AC train services replaced non-AC services, maintaining the total suburban service count at more than 1,800 daily. Besides offering a safe and cool ride, travel by AC local has also become economical.
