Owing to the dip in temperature the city has been experiencing a nip in the air during wee hours. (Express Photo by Amit Chakravarty)Mumbai recorded the coldest day of the season as the minimum temperature dipped to 18.4 degrees on Wednesday, which is only a degree above the normal range.
According to the India Meteorology Department’s (IMD) Santacruz observatory, the current season of winter started in January and will continue till February, while the previous season extended from October to December, 2023. Last season, the coldest day was recorded on December 24, as the city recorded 18.9 degrees of night temperature.
Sushma Nair, scientist from IMD (Mumbai), said that the current dip in mercury is the result of the northerly winds blowing towards Mumbai. Nair said that the night temperature may continue to range between 18 and 20 degrees throughout the week.
“The night temperature will continue to stay within the normal range, at least for the ongoing week unless there is a strong western disturbance. At present the easterlies and south easterlies are predominant, due to which there isn’t a very huge dip in the temperature,” Nair told Express on Wednesday. She added the temperature in Mumbai may fall when northern states experience intense snowfall.
“The northern states are also experiencing moderate snowfall right now and unless the condition over there becomes intense, one cannot predict a further dip in Mumbai’s temperature,” Nair told Express.
Owing to the dip in temperature the city has been experiencing a nip in the air during wee hours. Visibility in the city has also been affected due to the smog and haze.
