According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) data, Nariman Point recorded 252 mm of rainfall between midnight and 11 am Monday, making it the highest in the city. This was followed by 213 mm at Byculla, 207 mm at Colaba, 180 mm at Marine Lines, and 173 mm at Worli.
At the suburban belt, Santacruz recorded 103 mm, followed by 101 mm at Bandra, 82 mm at Chembur and 73 mm at Kurla. The heavy rain resulted in flash flooding at some of the key locations in Mumbai, which led to traffic snarls and inconvenience for residents. Some of the areas that resulted in waterlogging are as follows.
Kemp’s Corner
On Monday morning, following a heavy spell of rain, a large sinkhole was developed on the surface of Kemp’s Corner Road in south Mumbai’s upscale Pedder Road area. The hole was developed on the road connecting Breach Candy and Kemp’s Corner, causing a ‘hollow cave-in’ in the middle of the northbound carriageway of the road.
Soon after, the accumulated rainwater was seen gushing into the caved-in portion. The vehicular movement was temporarily stopped and diverted. Civic officials said repair works have been initiated, and no citizens were injured.
Hindmata junction
The Hindmata junction at central Mumbai’s Dadar got heavily inundated with water following the first spell of monsoon showers Monday morning, as the BMC’s claim of making this area flood-free fell flat on its face.
Due to the waterlogging on roads, vehicular movement was stopped. Meanwhile, photos and videos that went viral on social media showed citizens walking on these roads through knee-deep water to reach their destination. Issuing an alert on the social media site X, the Mumbai traffic police stated that traffic movement was affected at the Hindmata junction.
King’s Circle
Central Mumbai’s King’s Circle junction, another flood-prone low-lying area, saw heavy flooding Monday morning. The Mumbai Police alerted that traffic movements have been affected in this area. Following the heavy rain on Monday morning, the main carriageway of the road got severely inundated, which caused vehicles travelling on the road to break down. Meanwhile, the drainage lines adjoining the roads also overflowed, contributing to waterlogging.
Bandra and Andheri
Even though the suburban belt of Mumbai recorded comparatively lower rainfall than the island city, Bandra and Andheri witnessed heavy waterlogging following the first spell of heavy monsoon showers.
Waterlogging was recorded in the Bandstand area, with the roads getting submerged and overflowing with rainwater. Meanwhile, the Andheri subway was also shut down for vehicular movement on Monday morning after the same got inundated due to the rain, thus adding to the existing traffic snarls in the western suburbs.
