Trains on Mumbai’s underground Aqua Line 3, also known as Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Line, will now have an end evacuation system. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRC), which is the project implementing authority, said evacuation is done from emergency doors at both ends of trains and that exits can be better regulated under this system.

As per MMRC, the end evacuation system has been adopted, rather than the side evacuation system, since Mumbai Metro Line 3 is underground.

The control for the end evacuation system is given to the train driver in their cabins and commuters can walk vertically to exit in case of any emergency. For example, if there is a fire at the station, commuters can get off through the two exit points instead of getting to the platform area.

“Walking is easier for passengers in this system as they can walk through the coaches or on the track,” an MMRC official said.

This system is already being used in metros in London, Paris, Berlin, Washington, Singapore, Dubai, China, and Bangkok, as well as in Delhi Metro, Kolkata Metro (N-S), and Hyderabad Metro.

MMRC plans to complete Metro 3 Phase 1 from Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) to Aarey by December this year. And, the 33-km stretch from Colaba-BKC to Aarey will be operational by next year.

Currently, MMRC is carrying out a trial run on the 3-km stretch between Marol station and Aarey. With the completion of track laying work and system integration, MMRC will extend the trial run on other stations in Phase 1 in the coming days.
