A 28-YEAR-OLD mason, who jumped into a drain to save a minor girl, lost his life even as the girl was saved in Ghatkopar on Sunday.

According to the police, the incident took place in Ramabai Colony area of Ghatkopar (east) on Sunday afternoon around 4pm when a minor girl, Sonali Banjara, was playing with a ball. When the ball fell into a drain, she went to retrieve it, but lost her balance and fell into the drain.

After she started shouting for help, two neighbours, Sandeep Sutar (37) and Shahzad Shaikh (27), a mason, heard her cries for help and jumped into the drain to save her.

An officer said while they managed to save her, and Sutar managed to come out, Shaikh’s leg got stuck in the sludge and he struggled to come out and eventually drowned. In the meantime, the locals alerted the police and fire brigade officials who reached the spot in some time and took out Shaikh.

Shaikh was taken to the local hospital where he was declared dead. The Pant Nagar police took an Accidental Death Report in the matter. An official said that Shaikh, who is married, is survived by his wife and four kids.
