(Representational Image/Express Archives) The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai has significantly increased its terminal entry points, also known as eGates, from 24 to 68 — the highest number at an airport in the country — which is expected to decrease the passenger wait times considerably.
With the increased entry points, the processing capacity at the airport has tripled to 7,440 passengers per hour at Terminal 2 (T2) and 2,160 at Terminal 1 (T1).
Terminal 2 now features 28 dedicated DigiYatra e-gates and 28 non-DigiYatra e-gates. Terminal 1 includes six dedicated DigiYatra e-gates and six non-DigiYatra e-gates.
Additionally, 118 e-gates are being deployed at the Pre-Embarkation Security Check (PESC) area at T2 to streamline passenger movement further.
DigiYatra passengers can pass through e-gates using biometric validation, without showing their ticket, boarding pass, or identity verification. The Digital Gateway solution utilises sensors and biometric face pods integrated with the DigiYatra foundation to efficiently identify and guide passengers.
To assist first-time DigiYatra passengers, CSMIA has deployed “Digi Buddies” to guide them in using the self-service systems. The airport will also implement AI and machine learning-enabled cameras to enhance security.
A CSMIA spokesperson stated, “This initiative reflects our dedication to pioneering technological advancements that enhance passenger experience. By increasing the number of eGates and integrating advanced biometric systems, we are committed to ensuring swift, secure, and seamless travel for all our passengers.”
In the 2023-’24 period, Mumbai airport recorded over 52.8 million passengers, marking a 16 per cent increase in passenger traffic compared to the previous year’s 43.9 million passengers.
