Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project: Work of 394 m-long intermediate tunnel completed

The construction work of a 394-meter-long additionally driven intermediate tunnel (ADIT) was completed last week at Ghansoli for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project, National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) officials said.
The ADIT tunnel is meant to provide construction workers and vehicles access to a point from where excavation works for the main-line’s tunnel can start by the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM).
The 26-meter-deep inclined ADIT will facilitate the construction of the 3.3-km tunnel segment using the NATM.
Of the 21 km of main line’s tunnel, 16 km will be constructed using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), while the remaining 5 km will utilise NATM. Excavation for the ADIT began on December 6, 2023, and the entire 394 meters was completed in six months.
A total of 214 controlled blasts, using 27,515 kg of explosives under expert supervision, ensured safe excavation with high-level instrumentation, as per NHSRCL.
The construction of the 21- km tunnel from the Mumbai Bullet Train station to Shilphata is presently on. A 7-km stretch of this tunnel will run under the sea at Thane Creek (Intertidal zone), marking the first such tunnel in India.
This single-tube tunnel will accommodate two tracks for both up and down trains.
TBM with cutter heads measuring 13.6 meters in diameter will be used for the tunnel construction, larger than the typical 6-8 meter diameter cutter heads used for urban metro tunnels, which accommodate only one track.
