The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has introduced 21 additional metro services on Lines 2A and 7, increasing the total daily trips from 284 to 305.

The decision comes in response to a steady rise in passenger numbers and follows a successful pilot of the additional trips during peak hours.

The services are operated by Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL), the operational arm of MMRDA.

To ease rush hour congestion, train frequency at peak hours has been improved from 6 minutes 35 seconds to 5 minutes 50 seconds.

However, during non-peak hours, frequency remains unchanged at 9 minutes 30 seconds.

The move follows a recent record of 3.01 lakh daily passengers on July 8, the highest single-day ridership on these two lines.

Since then, the ridership has seen consistent growth over the past weeks.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who reviewed the service update, said the Metro was fast becoming the preferred transport option for many residents. “As citizens increasingly embrace the Metro as their primary mode of transport, it becomes our duty to stay ahead of their expectations. The deployment of additional trains and the frequency enhancement reflect our intent to make urban commuting faster, more efficient, and more responsive to real-time demands,” he said.

Deputy Chief Minister and MMRDA Chairman Eknath Shinde called the metro a reliable public transport system, especially during disruptions in other modes of travel.

“The decision to introduce 21 additional trips was informed by careful analysis of travel patterns and peak-hour congestion trends,” said Rubal Agarwal, Managing Director, MMMOCL.
