Officials maintained that no injuries were reported in the blaze.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the incident was reported at around 7.57 pm near the Air India building chowk along Marine Drive.
Eyewitnesses recalled that the fire occurred after a taxi dashed into an SUV vehicle in the traffic. “After the taxi hit the SUV from behind, the taxi caught on fire. As the drivers started arguing, the fire soon spread to the SUV,” shared Sanjay Mitra, an eyewitness, who works in a residential building nearby.
Nearly 20 minutes after the vehicles caught on fire, the fire tenders from Mumbai Fire Brigade arrived on spot to douse the flames. At least two fire engines were pressed into operations, while officials from Mumbai Police were also mobilised to control the situation.
With the cars ablaze in the midst of the road, traffic along the busy Marine Drive route was impacted for nearly 30-45 minutes during the peak travel hours when office goers leave to head back home.
Officials from BMC and MFB maintained that the fire remained confined to the two vehicles. No injuries were reported in the incident, said officials.
