A day after a purported video of a National Cadet Corps (NCC) student assaulting his juniors on the campus of the Joshi Bedekar College emerged on social media, the Mumbai University has formed a three-member committee to conduct an inquiry.

After receiving various complaint letters regarding the incident at Thane’s college, Mumbai University has formed the committee. A notification in this regard was issued by the Registrar of the Mumbai University Prof. Sunil Bhirud addressing the members of the committee.

The committee will comprise of Prof Mohan Joshi – principal of Chetna College in Bandra, Dr Dyaneshwar Doke – principal of Dahanukar College in Vileparle and Dr Vasant Mali – principal of J Watumull Sadhubella College in Ulhasnagar. The committee is asked to submit the report immediately.

Joshi Bedekar College in Thane runs a NCC unit on its campus, along with two other sister concerns — Bandodkar College and VPM Polytechnic. The viral video, captured by a fellow student, shows a physical training session at the Joshi Bedekar College on a rainy day. Some of the NCC cadets — all boys — are seen standing in push-up position in a water-logged area with their feet and head touching the ground and hands folded above the back. When one of the boys changes posture, a senior student is seen thrashing him with a stick. The video sparked a controversy and several student organisations started demanding inquiry into the case.

Yuva Sena (UBT) also led a protest at the college in Thane on Friday morning demanding to lodge a police case against the student who is seen thrashing his juniors in the video. “The video is disturbing and we demand strict action against the student. But more importantly, we also demand inquiry into how this NCC unit was running when the teacher coordinator from here is already transferred to a different post. The college should be held accountable for allowing such activities, in absence of a teacher,” said Pradeep Sawant from Yuva Sena who has written to Mumbai University demanding action against the college.
