The Mumbai police on Thursday opposed a plea by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) that sought to intervene over the closure report filed by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) in connection with the Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank (MSCB) scam.
Earlier this year, ED had filed an intervention application opposing Mumbai police EOW’s closure report. EOW in its closure report had for the second time said there was no evidence to file a chargesheet against the persons investigated, which included Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.
ED, in its fresh intervention application, said it had filed its case based on EOW’s FIR and had filed the main chargesheet (prosecution complaint) and two supplementary charge-sheets after the probe.
In its response filed on Thursday, EOW said when ED had made a similar plea in 2020 at a time when EOW first filed a closure report, it was rejected by the special court which said the agency had no locus standi. EOW said ED’s fresh application repeats the same points. Special Judge R N Rokade is likely to hear the matter next on July 12.
The case relates to MSCB officials allegedly giving loans to sugar factories, without following the procedure, even after they had turned into non-performing assets (NPAs) and their subsequent sale to kin of the accused below market value.
