Three months after a moneylender had slashed his throat allegedly disturbed over his wifes extra-marital affair, tragedy struck the family again on Tuesday when his 33-year-old widow allegedly fed poison to her two young children before consuming it herself. While both the children were declared brought dead by hospital authorities, the mother Shilpa Joshi is still at the Intensive Care Unit of the Sion Hospital.
The incident happened around 7.30 pm on Tuesday at a flat in Sri Niketan Society,Sion. The flat owned by Joshis parents has been lying vacant for the past five years. On Tuesday evening,Joshi arrived with her two daughters Ayushi and Vritti. She greeted us and after opening the door asked for candles and a glass of water. She then locked the door from inside. We didnt hear anything from her after that. Only when her mother called us up around 9 pm to enquire about Joshi, did we realise that she was still in the house, said a neighbour on condition of anonymity.
Her family came around 11 pm. They repeatedly called out to her,but she didnt open the door. Then they broke it open and found Joshi and the two children lying comatose on the floor. While both the girls were declared brought dead by the hospital authorities,Joshi was admitted to the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), said the neighbour.
Senior Police Inspector P G Nagare of Sion police station said they had registered a case of murder and attempt to commit suicide against Joshi. He said the motive behind her act was yet to be ascertained. The police found a box of pesticide.
Three months ago,her husband Viral Joshi had allegedly committed suicide due to his wifes extra-marital affair. He had written a suicide note on the wall blaming a neighbour for his suicide. We had arrested the latter for abetment to suicide, said Nagare. Though Joshi has regained consciousness, she is unable to talk. Only after the complete recovery, she would be able to give a statement, said Nagare.
