Monsoon may arrive tomorrow

Though pre-monsoon showers for the second day in a row came as a pleasant surprise for residents in parts of the city and suburbs, the monsoon will not reach the city before Sunday, said the Met department, owing to its slow advancement.

While the weather department had expected the monsoon to reach Mumbai by Friday evening, the monsoon stagnated for the second consecutive day, pushing back the arrival date. The monsoon line continues to pass through Harnai in Ratnagiri and Satara districts of Maharashtra,Agumbe and Medikeri in Karnataka,Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu and Gangtok in Sikkim.

Officials attributed the slow progress of the monsoon to weak currents. “The monsoon has not progressed further from its position on June 6. The monsoon currents are not picking up because of weak offshore trough. It might take two days to become full strength and may arrive in the city between June 10 and 12,” said N Y Apte,Deputy Director General,India Meteorological Department (IMD).

However,it is not a cause of worry as the normal onset date of the monsoon for Mumbai is June 10. “Besides,a variability of plus or minus four days is fine,” said Apte.

Meanwhile, some parts of the city continued to witness pre-monsoon showers with the island city receiving 3.3 mm of rainfall between 8.30 pm on Thursday and 8.30 pm on Friday while the suburbs received 0.4 mm rainfall within the same period.

Maximum temperatures dropped more than two degrees at Colaba, recording 32.7 °C,down from 35°C due to the cloudy skies while there was a minute change in Santacruz recording 33.1°C,up from 33°C.

Minimum temperatures were 25.8°C and 26°C in Colaba and Santacruz respectively.
