MNS men assault shopowner: Mira-Bhayandar traders shut shops in protest

The Kashmira police in Mira-Bhayandar have served notices to three of the seven MNS activists who allegedly assaulted the shopowner. The police Thursday said within a week a chargesheet will be filed against the accused.

Traders from Mira-Bhayandar area on Thursday called shut shops in protest against the alleged assault of a 48-year-old sweet shopowner by a group of men affiliated to the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) for not speaking Marathi.

At some places, traders’ associations also took out rallies against the MNS and later gathered at a hall shouting slogans against the party. The traders demanded stern action against the accused.

“As the offence committed by the accused carries a sentence less than three years’ imprisonment, following Supreme Court’s order, we have not arrested the accused and served them notices,” said Rajendra Kambale, senior inspector of Kashmira police station.

The incident occurred around 10:35 pm on June 29 at ‘Jodhpur Sweets and Namkeen’, a shop located in a busy area of Mira Road (East). The shopowner, Baboolal Khimaji Choudhary, a resident of Bhayander (East), stated in the FIR that seven unidentified men, aged between 20 and 30, entered his shop. Five of them were wearing scarves bearing the MNS name and symbol, he said.

After an argument, Choudhary was allegedly beaten up by the MNS men. The police have identified the three persons seen hitting the shopowner in a viral video as Karan Kandangire (31), Pramod Nilekat, and Akshay Dalvi.
