The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), following a directive from the state government, has initiated work on 17 delayed Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) projects across the city. Among them, the Sai Baba Housing Society in Jogeshwari has received a Letter of Intent (LOI), while the remaining projects are in the documentation phase and will be processed accordingly, said MHADA’s vice-president and CEO, Sanjeev Jaiswal.

To accelerate redevelopment, MHADA will soon invite tenders for the first project and subsequently float tenders for the remaining ones to appoint contractors.

In collaboration with the SRA, MHADA is working to revive stalled slum redevelopment projects across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Eight of these projects have already been withdrawn from their original developers under Section 13(2) of the Slum Rehabilitation Act. These include 12 projects in Goregaon, two in Bandra, five in Kurla, and two in Borivali/Dahisar. Additionally, feasibility assessments are underway for five more projects, all situated on MHADA-owned land.

Through these efforts, MHADA aims to create approximately 25,000 additional housing units. A review is also being conducted to assess the number of homes required for project-affected residents.

Among these projects, the Malvani Malad redevelopment is the largest, covering 14,000 slum dwellers. To fast-track progress, Jaiswal has instructed officials to conduct a biometric survey of all residents and deploy additional manpower. For sites lacking proper access roads, measures will be implemented to improve connectivity. A structured timeline has also been set for conducting biometric surveys of slum dwellers on MHADA-owned land, ensuring a streamlined redevelopment process.
