MHADA housing lottery: Winners await possession of homes as 1,300 still under construction
In October, MHADA announced a lottery for 2,030 homes across Mumbai city and suburbs.
As per MHADA’s guidelines, homes must have occupancy certificates before being included in the lottery. (File Photo)Around two months after MHADA’s (Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority) Mumbai Board announced the winners of its housing lottery, many of them are waiting to get possession of their homes — out of the 2,030 houses allotted in the lottery, 1,327 are still under construction.
It is estimated that the interior work on these homes will take an additional four-six months to complete.
In October, MHADA announced a lottery for 2,030 homes across Mumbai city and suburbs. A total of 1,34,350 online applications were received, out of which 1,13,811 applicants paid the deposit and participated. On October 8, the list of winners was announced.
While homes included in the lottery must have occupancy certificates, 1,327 homes under construction were still part of the lottery.
Winners have raised concerns about these delays, particularly regarding the inclusion of under-construction homes in the draw. As per MHADA’s guidelines, homes must have occupancy certificates before being included in the lottery. Many applicants have questioned whether this rule was followed, as nearly 65 per cent of the homes are incomplete.
Although the lottery process concluded successfully, many winners are questioning when they will actually receive possession.
MHADA has assured that interior work will be completed within four–six months.
As many as 442 winners from this year’s lottery had surrendered their homes to MHADA for various reasons, such as winning multiple homes or missing domicile certificates.
Of these surrendered homes, 406 were offered to those on the waiting list. MHADA has sent acceptance letters to these applicants, granting them 15 days to confirm their allotment.
For the 13 homes that received minimal interest during the lottery, MHADA plans to reallocate them.
Applicants must now confirm their acceptance through the app or website within the given timeframe, making this opportunity a real “lottery win” for those on the waiting list.
