Matka king murder: cops to submit fresh chargesheet

A sessions court ordered the Mumbai Crime Branch to submit a fresh chargesheet against all the accused involved in the alleged murder of matka king Suresh Bhagat after the charges under Mahrashtra Control of Organised Crime Act were dropped against them.

A sessions court ordered the Mumbai Crime Branch to submit a fresh chargesheet against all the accused involved in the alleged murder of matka king Suresh Bhagat after the charges under Mahrashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) were dropped against them.

The defence lawyers told the Additional Sessions Judge R V Avchat that they needed a fresh chargesheet before they put up their arguments. The court accepted the oral plea and ordered the Crime Branch to deliver a fresh chargesheet to all the accused by February 15.

The previous chargesheet was eight volumes and had over 300 pages. The names of witnesses were withheld for security reasons as per the provision under the MCOCA. However,in the new chargesheet several sanctions will have to be withdrawn as the charges would only pertain to Indian Penal Code now.

Bhagat was killed on June 13,2008,in an orchestrated road accident on the Alibaug-Pen Road. According to the prosecution,a truck rammed into Suresh’s vehicle while he was returning after a court hearing at Alibaug, killing him and six others on the spot.

Suresh’s ex-wife Jaya Chheda, son Hitesh and Suhas Roge, along with five others, have been arrested in the case and are in police custody. The motive as per the police was to usurp Suresh’s flourishing matka business.

Recently the MCOCA court dropped the charges against the accused after finding that no previous criminal antecedents were there for the case to be booked under the act.
