A 33-year-old man was arrested by the Mumbai Police on January 19 for allegedly taking videos of women in indecent angles and posting them on his social media accounts and YouTube channel.

According to police, the arrested person, Vaibhav Gajanan Angre — a resident of Girgaon in South Mumbai, has so far uploaded 400 such videos. It came to light recently when he shot a video of an on-duty woman police inspector and posted it on his YouTube channel.

“The accused would position the camera to capture the women from indecent angles without their knowledge. He would then edit the clips and upload on his YouTube channel as well as Facebook and Instagram accounts,” an officer said, adding that he had been doing this for two years.

Recently, he uploaded the video of a 36-year-old woman police inspector who was managing traffic in South Mumbai on his YouTube channel. “The video was shared on WhatsApp and when the officer learnt about it, she approached DB Marg police station and lodged a complaint,” said a police officer.

One of the ministers also informed police about the videos and instructed them to inquire into it. A case was registered under section 354 (D) (stalking) of the Indian Penal Code and section 67 (A) of Information Technology Act.

A special team was formed and the suspect was traced using his IP address and call record details. He was then arrested. “We have recovered two mobile phones and a SIM card from Angre. He was using eight different Gmail accounts,” said an officer, adding that the accused was produced before court on Friday and remanded in police custody.

Senior police inspector Vinay Ghorpade of DB Marg police station said, “We are trying to understand the motive behind the crime.” Investigators claimed that Angre believed that by posting such videos online, he would get more followers on social media and YouTube.
