Man held with gold bars valued at Rs 12.3 lakh at airport

Customs officials at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport Saturday arrested a passenger after 464 grams of gold valued at Rs 12.3 lakh was found in his check-in baggage.

Customs officials at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport Saturday arrested a passenger after 464 grams of gold valued at Rs 12.3 lakh was found in his check-in baggage.

Passenger Karkala Sulaiman was intercepted by the Air Intelligence Unit after he arrived on a Jet Airways flight from Riyadh. A Customs official said the AIU team found his behaviour suspicious,prompting them to check his baggage.

The team found five gold bars inside two emergency lights in his check-in bag. Black adhesive tape was used to secure the bars to the batteries,said a Customs official.
