Man held for setting lover on fire

Two days after claiming that she suffered burn injuries in a stove explosion,a 25-year-old woman revealed that she was set ablaze by her lover,following which the man was arrested on Thursday.

According to Jaywant Hargude,assistant commissioner of police (Malad division),Nazma Shaikh,whose husband works in Dubai,was allegedly having an affair with Asif Faiyaz Shaikh.

The woman allegedly told Asif,who is a tailor,that her husband had abandoned her and left for Dubai. However,on Monday,when Asif learnt that Shaikh’s husband was away for work,he told the victim that he wanted to end their relationship.

Shaikh told Asif she loved him and that she would commit suicide to prove it,the police said. In a fit of rage,Shaikh poured kerosene on herself and threatened to set herself on fire. An enraged Asif snatched the matchbox from her and set her abalze.

Shaikh was rushed to Masina Hospital with 65 per cent burns. When the police recorded her statement,she claimed her injuries were caused by a stove explosion. However,on Wednesday evening,when Shaikh’s husband returned,she revealed the truth to the police.


Police retrieve gold chains swallowed by thieves

Police have arrested two thieves in separate incidents in Malad (East) for swallowing gold chains to evade arrest. The police also recovered the stolen chains.

In the first incident,a 25-year-old man was robbed of his chain worth Rs 30,000 in Samta Nagar on Tuesday. After the complainant raised an alarm,four police constables nabbed 25-year-old Anwar Shaikh. After the police did not find the chain on searching Shaikh,they made him drink salt water and vomit.

“We have arrested Shaikh and recovered the chain from him,” said Anant Kenjele,senior inspector of Samta Nagar police station.

A day later,Neelam Moriya was on her way to Goregaon when a man snatched her chain and a locket worth Rs 45,000. Her husband chased the thief and nabbed him with the help of beat marshals.

The thief,Javed Baksh (26),was let off after police could not find the chain. However,suspecting foul play,police later sent him for an X-ray test which revealed the chain in his stomach.
