Weeks after a 26-year-old woman died by suicide in Borivali (East), police on Wednesday arrested one person for allegedly extorting a woman and abetting her suicide.
On April 3, the woman had allegedly ended her life by hanging at her home.
The Kasturba Marg police lodged a case when her family filed a complaint three weeks later after discovering that she was being harassed and extorted. The accused was identified as Sunny Arjun Kushalkar, who threatened her to tell everyone about his relationship with her and demanded money from her. “He had demanded Rs 10,000 from her and was blackmailing her,” the elder sister of the deceased woman stated in her statement to the police.
“He had even once told her to commit suicide,” said the woman’s elder sister, who is also the complainant in the case.
“Based on her family’s complaint, we have arrested the accused under sections 306 (abetment of suicide), 386 (extortion by putting a person in fear of death or grievous hurt), and 387 (putting a person in fear of death or grievous hurt, in order to commit extortion) of the IPC,” said a police officer.
