The 55-year-old man arrested over alleged possession of two fake Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) ID cards has not entered into the institution, Mumbai Police said, adding that they do not suspect any security issues in the matter.

The accused, Akhtar Hussain Ahmed, was arrested on October 17 by Mumbai Crime Branch after they received a tip off that he had two BARC ID cards.

“Since BARC is a sensitive location, the ID cards comprise high-end security measures like RFID (Radio-frequency Identification),” the official said.

According to police, the accused has never stepped into BARC and the quality of the card is quite poor which would not have allowed him to bypass the security there, an official said.

“The cards that we procured from Ahmed are basic and would not have allowed him access inside the sensitive premises,” the official added.

“Further, we also carried out our own investigation and found that he has never entered BARC,” the official said.
According to police, in 2004 Ahmed had been deported from Dubai, where he was initially working, and arrested in India after he had claimed to know “national secrets”.

“We suspect that he likes to claim that he has access to national secrets by using forged documents and making money by trying to sell them off. While his initial attempt in 2004 was foiled, he decided to try it again by creating two BARC IDs,” an official added.

“Ever since he was deported back to India, and released from prison, he had been doing small time jobs,” the official added.

The police are now trying to find out from where he procured the fake ID cards. He is currently in the custody of the Mumbai crime branch till October 24.
