22-year-old man drowns in pond near Ajanta Ellora caves while trying to save cousin
The Aurangabad police said more than 10 people, including the deceased and his cousin, headed to the Jogeshwari pond, located near the Ajanta Ellora Caves, when the accident occurred.

A 22-year-old man, who was part of a group which was on a visit to a waterfall near the Ajanta Ellora caves in Maharashtra’s Aurangabad, drowned on Sunday after he jumped into an overflowing pond while trying to save his cousin.
A police officer said a group of more than 10 people, including Tangade and his cousin, took a trip to a hilltop and were headed to the Jogeshwari pond, located near the Ajanta Ellora Caves. Tangade’s cousin slipped and fell in the Jogeshwari pond that was overflowing due to the monsoon.
While Tangade jumped into the pond to save his cousin, their friends formed a human chain and managed to pull out the cousin, but Tangade drowned. The police said the deceased, Harshadeep Tangade, and his cousin did not know how to swim.
The friends alerted the local police and the rescue authorities, following which teams reached the spot and pulled out the body of Tangade.
Dhananjay Farate, Inspector, Khultabad Police Station, Aurangabad, said Tangade was rushed to the Khultabad Hospital, where he was declared dead, and subsequently a post-mortem examination was conducted.
The officer said they have filed an accidental death report in the matter, and the autopsy report has not indicated any foul play.
The deceased was the son of a local municipal contractor and was studying in college.
A police officer said following complaints by locals about the deep pools in the pond, in which several people have drowned, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) closed the road access to the caves. However, some tourists still approach it from the other side, making it more dangerous.
