This is the second such incident this year. A woman and her child were crushed to death when an old banyan tree collapsed outside the CR2 Mall in Nariman Point last month. “Despite civic body’s claim of carrying out regular pruning and maintenance of trees, nothing was done in the garden,” said Devendra Shridhar, corporator of the area.

Deputy Municipal Commissioner (gardens) Suhas Karvande said the civic body had not pruned coconut trees because chances of them collapsing were very few. “We remove ripe fruits from these trees,so that they don’t fall on anyone. In this case,we are trying to find out the possible cause as it was neither raining nor was the tree leaning due to weight,” he said.
