A 55-year-old man died after falling into an open manhole allegedly left unattended by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) on the busy Kalyan-Shil Road near Tata Power, on Sunday evening.

The deceased, identified as Babu Dharma Chavan, was walking through the Gandhi Nagar area of Kalyan East when he reportedly slipped and fell into an uncovered chamber. Officials said the passersby saw Chavan falling and immediately rushed to help and pulled him up. But due to the fall, Chavan sustained a serious head injury and was immediately rushed by local residents to a private hospital in Dombivli, where he succumbed during treatment late Sunday night.

According to residents, the chamber had been left open for weeks despite repeated complaints by local residents to the MIDC authorities. “This chamber has always been open. We raised this issue many times, but nobody paid attention. Now we have lost our father. Tomorrow, it could be someone else’s,” said Chavan’s sons, Kashinath and Pravin Chavan, speaking to media outside the hospital.

Kashinath and Pravin are both BJP office-bearers from Kalyan.

The incident sparked outrage among the residents and many gathered at the hospital premises and at the accident site, accusing the MIDC of gross negligence.

Some protestors refused to accept the body until action was taken against those responsible.

BJP leader and former Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) Deputy Mayor Moreshwar Bhoir blamed the MIDC for the fatality and demanded action against officials concerned.

“Their inaction is costing lives. MIDC is putting the lives of citizens from all 27 villages in danger. We demand that a case of culpable homicide be filed against the officials who were responsible,” he said.
