A 44-year-old man was arrested Wednesday for allegedly breaking into the houses of 13 police officers at their quarters in Mahim and stealing valuables.
The police said that the accused, Kamruddin Salauddin Shaikh, who had also targeted a society office and a playgroup within the same colony, is a history-sheeter in house break-ins and has targeted other police quarters in Bandra (E) in the past.
According to police, the incident of house break-ins occurred between the night of August 16 and the early hours of August 17.
A Mahim police station officer said, “A constable from our station is assigned to oversee the police quarters in our jurisdiction. This constable is responsible for managing the allotment of quarters and informing superiors when a quarter falls vacant and is available for reallocation.”
Around 7:30 am on August 17, constable Rajaram Mohite arrived at the police colony upon learning of the theft. Mohite discovered that the thief had broken into the residences of 13 police officers.
“Upon contacting the residents, it became clear that most were away during the night, which made their homes vulnerable to the break-in,” the officer said.
In addition to the police officers’ homes, the thief also targeted a playgroup and a society office within the building.
“We got a tip-off about his location in Mahim following which a team was sent and the accused was taken in custody,” the officer added.
The police said that Shaikh has confessed to committing the crime and they even discovered that he is a history sheeter and in the past broke into other police quarters as well.
An officer said, “The accused has targeted police quarters in Kherwadi in the past. We are trying to understand whether he has any enmity with police personnel and whether he is actively looking for a police residence to steal.”
The accused was produced before court and remanded in police custody till August 28.
