Maharashtra universities told to publish list of colleges having no NAAC grade
Even as Maharashtra currently tops the chart in number of NAAC accredited colleges in the state, the NAAC data until August end shows that out of 28 government colleges, 24 have the NAAC grades.

Universities in Maharashtra will now have to publish a list of colleges having no National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) grade, in local newspapers. As the state’s higher and technical education department is cracking down on colleges not having NAAC grade, a set of new instructions have been issued to ensure compliance.
While publication of lists in local newspapers are to caution the students and parents studying in those colleges, a list of the same is also going to be mandatory on each varsity’s official website. The idea is to dissuade students and parents from taking admission to colleges having no NAAC grade. Additionally, affiliating universities are also asked to send notices to such colleges asking reasons on why their affiliation should not be cancelled.
“We have time and again reminded universities to take action against colleges which do not have NAAC grades. There is provision in Maharashtra Universities Act empowering them to de-affiliate such colleges. Ideally, such actions should have been taken by universities before the new academic year began. However, following the failure by varsities in doing so, VCs and registrars of all universities were asked to personally submit the status report. The new set of guidelines are after the meetings,” said Dr Shailendra Deolankar, Director Higher Education, adding that universities have to comply with all three instructions within 15 days.
Even as Maharashtra currently tops the chart in number of NAAC accredited colleges in the state, the NAAC data until August end shows that out of 28 government colleges, 24 have the NAAC grades. Out of a total of 1,177 government-aided colleges, 1,133 have obtained NAAC grade. But out of 2,141 non-aided colleges across Maharashtra, only 257 have NAAC accreditation.
Among the non-aided colleges having no NAAC, Nagpur tops the chart with 405 colleges, followed by Aurangabad, with 331 colleges. Panvel and Pune region have almost similar non-NAAC graded non-aided colleges with 266 and 263, respectively. All other regions are less than 200. Regions like Solapur and Jalgaon show a very smaller number of colleges which are non-accredited.
“But Solapur has a total of 45 non-aided colleges and only 9 of them are NAAC graded. And in Jalgaon, only 14 out of total 71 non-aided colleges are NAAC-graded,” pointed out an official from the Directorate of Higher Education.
