Maharashtra to see 264 new colleges in 2024-25

The state's higher and technical education department issued a Government Resolution (GR), declaring the Letters of Intent (LOIs) submitted by these colleges approved. Out of the 264 new colleges, Only 14 will be under Mumbai university.

Maharashtra will see 264 new colleges under 13-non-agricultural state universities from the upcoming academic year 2024-25. While most of them will offer courses in traditional Arts, Commerce and Science, many will offer skill-oriented and specialised courses under the conventional nomenclature.

The state’s higher and technical education department issued a Government Resolution (GR), declaring the Letters of Intent (LOIs) submitted by these colleges approved. Out of the 264 new colleges, Only 14 will be under Mumbai university.

According to the list of new colleges attached to the GR, SNDT Women’s University will see the most number of new colleges — 82 — under it’s jurisdiction spread across Maharashtra. All of them will have skill-oriented degree courses for women. According to varsity officials, this will help support the state’s objective to increase women’s enrollments in higher education institutions as most of these are job-oriented courses.

Savitribai Phule Pune University follows with 59 new colleges and Santa Gadagebaba Amravati University with 29 colleges. All others will have 20 or less colleges.

At a meeting headed by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde last year, the Maharashtra State Commission for Higher Education and Development had approved a five-year (2024-29) perspective plan for non-agricultural universities in the state. Here, 1,499 locations were identified across the state for new colleges to be started. The list of approved LOIs is the first phase of this plan.

These colleges will have to provide required facilities for specially-abled individuals as prescribed under the Right of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 to ensure inclusive education.
