Maharashtra local body polls, Maharashtra Local Body Election 2025: The elections for 246 municipal councils and 42 nagar panchayats in Maharashtra are scheduled to be held next month. About 66,775 personnel, including 288 returning officers and their assistants, will be deployed for poll duties.
The Panchayati Raj system in Maharashtra is a three-tier system of rural local governance consisting of the Gram Panchayat at the village level, the Panchayat Samiti at the block level, and the Zilla Parishad at the district level.
A nagar parishad or municipal council administers smaller urban areas. It is responsible for local governance and urban development. On the other hand, a nagar panchayat is a form of urban local governance for areas in transition from rural to urban, often with a population between 12,000 and 40,000.
The last date to file nominations for the Maharashtra local body polls is November 17, with scrutiny set for November 18. The candidates can withdraw their nominations until November 21, and the final list along with election symbols will be released on November 26, according to PTI.
The Maharashtra local body polls will take place on December 2. The voting will be held through EVMs to elect 6,859 members and 288 presidents in 246 municipal councils and 42 nagar panchayats, reports PTI.
The votes for Maharashtra local body election will be counted on December 3. The 6,859 members to be elected include 3,492 seats reserved for women, 895 for Scheduled Castes, 338 for Scheduled Tribes, and 1,821 for OBCs, reports PTI.
The major political parties to contest upcoming local bodies poll in Maharashtra are: BJP, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (SP), Congress, Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), Rashtriya Samaj Party (RSP), etc.
