Maharashtra leads in surrendering LPG subsidy

Maharashtra has emerged as the leading state in the country in giving up LGP subsidy in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s campaign “Give It Up.”

The total LPG subsidy surrendered in Maharashtra is the highest at 16,42, 814, followed by Uttar Pradesh at 12,53,242, Delhi 7,27,374, Karnataka 6,97,710 and Tamil Nadu 6,47,985.

Taking the centre’s campaign ahead, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had used various public forums to appeal to the upper strata of society to give up subsidy so that it would help in providing the same to a larger number of those Below Poverty Line (BPL).

The state had been aggressively pursuing the centre’s campaign in over a dozen metros in Maharashtra.

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan expressed happiness over the contribution from people across the states including Maharashtra.

The “Give Up” campaign launched last year estimated that one crore consumers are eligible to surrender LPG subsidy. There are 14.54 crore active LPG consumers in the country.

The five states that topped in surrendering LPG subsidy are Maharashtra, UP, Delhi, Karnataka and TN, almost accounting for 50 per cent of contributers.
