According to the notice sent to the college administration dated June 29, the action has been taken following recommendations of a committee formed by the Mumbai University, which was headed by retired district judge Shashikant Salve.
The notice, signed by Director of Higher Education, Maharashtra, also refers to a visit paid by Joint Director of Higher Education to the college after receiving multiple complaints from alumni and students organisations.
“It was revealed in the visit that teaching and non-teaching staff of the aided section are forced to sign on the attendance muster without allowing them to work as per their regular duty. Whereas a person from the non-aided section of the college has been appointed as a principal without required permission for it,” states the notice while adding that it has led to uncertainty among students and faculty members.
According to the notice, the college administration has been given eight days to respond to the showcause notice, failing which the government will appoint an administrator for the college.
The decision by K V Pendharkar college to convert to a completely unaided educational institute from the 2024-25 academic year which began in June by closing down its aided sections has been met with opposition from former students of this nearly 50-years-old institution.
While the alumni have united under the banner of ‘Save Pendharkar College’, various students organisations too have written to Mumbai University as well as state government demanding their intervention against the administration’s decision to run as an unaided educational institute.
