Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday announced a high-level probe into a video of BJP leader Kirit Somaiya that allegedly showed the former MP in a compromising position. The video was repeatedly aired on a Marathi TV channel on Monday and the issue was raised in the Upper House of the state legislature on Tuesday.

“It is indeed a serious issue. We will conduct a detailed enquiry. The woman in the video will be identified. Police will be told. Nobody will be protected. A senior-level probe will be conducted,” Fadnavis said, in response to Leader of Opposition in the Upper House Ambadas Danve and Anil Parab, Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders, raising the issue.

The uproar in the state legislature over the video issue came even as Somaiya wrote to Fadnavis seeking an inquiry into the authenticity of the video and posted on Twitter that he had never abused a woman.

Danve handed over a pen drive of what he claimed were eight hours of video footage that featured Somaiya. “A leader who claims to be close to ED, CBI… and now I have some videos with me of him. I salute the woman who gave me the videos. The person has CISF protection. Whether the woman was being extorted?” Danve said. “Eight hours of videos are there with me in the pen drive. I will give it to the deputy chairperson…The leader’s name is Kirit Somaiya,” he added.

“Many people have gone to prison because of him. He enjoys CISF protection… will the government act against him and remove his security? Please provide the pen drive to the home department for enquiry,” Danve said, even as Opposition leaders shouted ‘shame’, ‘shame’.

“Earlier there were pen drive bombs that went off in the Lower House. Now it will happen in the Upper House,” Parab said, speaking later. When BJP leader Chandrakant Patil said that the name of the leader should not be mentioned, Parab said that because of this person, the families of so many people were harassed by central agencies.

“The truth of the video should come out. We should find out who the woman is and an SIT should probe the matter. You say you are a party with a difference. We should find out if the woman was being blackmailed. We have heard of extortion of money. This seems to be extortion for sex,” Parab alleged.

“Somaiya said I have not harassed any woman but did not say the video was fake. I request home minister to conduct a probe. His security should be removed since it is because of these things he is emboldened,” Parab added.
