In a first, Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell has decided to establish a sub-committee to address students’ complaints during the admission process. Ensuring speedy grievance redressal, this committee will take a decision within 15 days after a candidate submits any complaint.

The state CET Cell made the announcement via a notification issued in this regard stating that this sub-committee is established under the provisions of the Maharashtra Unaided Private Professional Educational Institutions (Regulation of Admissions and Fees) Act, 2015 which empowers the CET Cell to conduct entrance examinations and centralised admission processes (CAP) for various professional courses.

“During entrance examinations and the admission process, many complaints are received at different stages from students, parents, or other stakeholders. The procedure of the Admission Regulatory Authority includes provisions for resolving students’ grievances. Accordingly, any admission-related complaint may be submitted before the Authority, and a decision will be taken within 15 days and before the final date of admission,” stated the notification.

The notification further provides structure of the sub-committee. The Deputy Secretary of the Admission Regulatory Authority will be the chairperson of this committee. In addition, a representative of the concerned Directorate (equivalent to a Class 2 post) and an officer from the Admission Regulatory Authority will serve as members. The exam coordinator of the relevant department in the State CET Cell will serve as the member-secretary.

The CET Cell also plans to set-up multiple help-centres across the state to resolve difficulties faced during admission to professional courses. These district-level help-centres are expected to provide timely assistance to candidates at local level, instead of having to approach the CET Cell’s office located in Mumbai; which is a cumbersome process for students spread across the state. With multiple entrance tests being conducted across the state, these help-centres are going to be important according to the CET Cell.

Last week, the state’s higher and technical education department declared that now the CET Cell will conduct two sessions of MHT-CET, following the JEE model which is a national level entrance test for engineering admissions. Whereas MHT-CET is a state level entrance test for admission to courses such as engineering, pharmacy, agriculture etc. This will be applicable to MB/MMS CET too. The idea is to provide students with two opportunities to appear for the CET, as per their convenience.
