Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) on Friday alleged that the ruling coalition was misusing government machinery to delete names of genuine voters from the voters’ list for the Maharashtra Assembly elections 2024. The MVA alleged that around 2,500-10,000 names were deleted in each constituency where it gained a lead in the Lok Sabha polls.

“The BJP is playing a loser’s game. It has realised that it is losing and that’s why such tactics are being used. We warn the government that the people of Maharashtra will not spare them,” said Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole, adding that Form Number 7 should not be accepted online as names of Opposition voters were being deleted.

Form Number 7 is used to get names deleted from the existing electoral roll by raising objections. The MVA delegation will meet the chief electoral officer of Maharashtra later in the day, demanding that the process of deletion of names through online applications be discontinued.

“We appeal to the people of Maharashtra to check their names in the final voters’ list to be published on October 29,” said Leader of Opposition Vijay Wadettiwar.

Meanwhile, Patole said men are going door-to-door promoting government schemes under the state government’s ‘Yojanadoot’ initiative. “We demand that this scheme be cancelled immediately,” he said.

“The chief election commissioner had come to Mumbai saying the poll percentage should be increased. But what is happening right now in Maharashtra is shocking. We are meeting the state’s chief electoral officer demanding that this (deletion of names) should be stopped,” said Patole, further alleging that Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis and CM Eknath Shinde were involved in the ‘conspiracy’.

NCP (SP) leader and MLA Jitendra Awhad sought to know why the Election Commission has not yet removed Rashmi Shukla from the post of the director general of police (DGP). “In West Bengal, the EC had removed the DGP, but it is not acting to remove a DGP who was accused of phone tapping,” said Awhad.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and Lok Sabha MP Anil Desai said that home polling for senior citizens above 85 years should not be done without the presence of all political agents. “In Mumbai suburban, every Assembly has around 4,500 (senior citizens) on an average while in the city area, this number is around 6,500. This is extremely important and it should not be rigged. We demand that our political representatives be present while this process is being carried out,” said Desai.

The 288-member Maharashtra Assembly will go to the polls on November 20, with the counting slated to be held on November 23.
