In a move to boost pre-school education, which is now brought under formal education as per recommendations of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Maharashtra government has started recruitment for 14,690 vacancies of Anganwadi helpers.

As per the recruitment notification released by the women and child development department, women who passed Class12 and are aged between 18 to 35 years are eligible to apply. The recruitment drive will be conducted locally for each project.

There are total 553 projects active across the state under the Integrated Child Development Service (ICDS) scheme. ICDS commissioner Kailas Pagare, said, “There are 1,10,556 posts of Anganwadi helpers, of which 14,690 are vacant. In order to effectively implement the ICDS scheme with services such as immunisation, nutrition and also pre-school education, adequate staff are required. Each Anganwadi has one worker and a helper. Within a month or so we will have full staff.”

According to Pagare, as the recruitment drive is not a centralised system, project-based staff will be able to complete the process within a month as soon as the application deadline closes by August end.

“There is no interview. Candidates are selected on the basis of merit of Class 12 marks. If any candidate has a graduation certificate, it automatically adds 10 marks,” said Pagare.

As NEP 2020 recommends that Anganwadi should provide pre-school education, the ICDS is also working to create a training module for Anganwadi workers and helpers so that they can impart pre-school level education.

“We are working with the State Council for Educational Research and Training (SCERT) to develop a training module to enable Anganwadi staff to impart pre-school level education to children, for which it is important to have adequate staff,” said Pagare.
