The Motor Vehicles Department cancelled licences of 105 driving schools in Mumbai as part of a statewide crackdown on faulty driving schools over the past two months.

Licences of 56 driving schools were cancelled in western region,34 driving schools in the eastern region and 15 in the central region for not sticking to norms.

“We have also issued showcause notices to some driving schools for lacking some facilities. These schools will be re-inspected,” a senior RTO official said.

Another senior RTO official added,“The department had issued showcause notices to most of the driving schools whose licences have been cancelled. These schools don’t have sufficient space. While some were operating under bogus documents and forged signatures, others didn’t have sufficient vehicles or instructors,” he added.

The Motor Vehicles Department checked a total of 1,698 driving schools across Maharashtra,of which 503 have been issued showcause notices, while the licences of about 220 schools have been cancelled and about 95 suspended.

The department has sent a proposal to the state government suggesting that Industrial Training Institutes in the state could start providing driving courses,Transport Commissioner V N More said. This will improve the quality of driving, especially in the interiors of Maharashtra, and also instil a sense of competitiveness among driving schools, leading to better quality of teaching,he added.
