LACs set up to resolve issues of 30,000 co-op housing societies in Mumbai suburbs

The demand for larger homes, particularly 2-3 BHK units, has contributed to a 3-4 per cent YoY price rise for these segments. Local area committees (LACs) will be set up under the Mumbai District Co-op Housing Federation Ltd (suburban) in 180 wards of suburban Mumbai to resolve issues of registered housing societies. Abhishek Ghosalkar, Chairman of the said federation, said there are only eleven members and over 30,000 societies in suburban Mumbai.
“As per the government resolution issued May 4 by the state government, every society should have a complaint redressal cell and the federation members should have representatives in the housing society cell. Since practically it is not possible, therefore LACs are being set up at ward level. The LACs are expected to conduct a meeting every 15 days and the federation will conduct a housing darbar at the end of every month where LAC members will put forth issues that can’t be resolved at ward level,” Ghosalkar said.
He furthermore added that besides resolving housing societies issues, LACs will also encourage societies to go for self-redevelopment and provide them necessary guidance.

Ramesh Prabhu, Secretary Chairman of MSWA and Secretary of the Mumbai federation, said, “Representatives of LACs will provide a platform to housing societies. This will help resolve disputes expeditiously. Moreover, members of LACs will be from housing societies of that ward itself, who understand the local issues very well.”
Each of the LACs will have 15 to 20 members, added Prabhu. 50 LACs have been established so far.
Meanwhile, in the latest development, the state cooperation department issued a notification on June 28 allowing housing societies to continue with the existing managing committee. Co-operative housing society elections which are due will be held after September, due to the current heavy rainfall.
