A laboratory assistant of a Bhiwandi-based college has been arrested by Azad Maidan police for allegedly leaking the question paper of commerce V examination. The police said the role of the accused, identified as Rajnikant Gajanan Mouryam, was identified after Mumbai University raised a suspicion that the paper had been leaked from the college he is employed with.
According to the police officials, the Azad Maidan police had booked a 20-year-old and his unidentified accomplice for allegedly cheating during the fifth semester of TY B Com examination. Although the incident had occurred on October 31, the matter was reported to police on November 2 following which a case of cheating under Indian Penal Code and the Maharashtra Prevention of Malpractices in University, Board and other Specified Examinations Act was registered.
The FIR read that while the complainant was posted as a junior invigilator in the examination hall, he noticed that one of the students was distracted and as he was suspicious of his behaviour, the examiner checked him thoroughly when he found the question paper of commerce V in his mobile phone.
“Answers to objective questions were also written on the mobile phone of the examinee,” said a police officer.
Accordingly, the student’s phone was seized by the examiner following which he reported the matter to higher officials in the Mumbai University.
While the police were investigating the matter, they were informed that the paper was leaked from a Bhiwandi-based college.
“We then conducted a probe during which Mourya’s role was identified after which he was brought to the police station and arrested,” said an officer.
The accused was produced before court and remanded in police custody till December 2.
The officials further said they are trying to ascertain whether more people are involved.
