Kunbi tag for Marathas: Govt forms panel to make recommendations
The committee will make recommendations by checking issues of Maratha community's revenue and educational records, a decree from landlords from the times of Nizam, agreements signed during Nizam’s time and other papers and genealogy from people in Maratha community.

The Maharashtra government has appointed a committee headed by Additional chief secretary (Revenue) to coordinate and make recommendations about giving Kunbi (peasant) certificate to Marathas in Marathwada region of the state, which will recognise them as Other Backward Castes. The 11-member committee will submit its report within three months to the government.

The issue of Marathas in Marathwada has been in discussion from the time agitation for reservation was kickstarted by the community. It was argued that being part of the Hyderabad province, the Marathas were then counted as Kunbis, hence Other Backward Castes.
After the region became part of Maharashtra, the community was reportedly counted as Marathas, thus losing the tag of Other Backward Castes.
The Kunbi Marathas, or the peasants, fall in the OBC category. However, it is the Kunbi Marathas in Konkan as well as Vidarbha region who come under this category and hence avail the benefits of OBC reservation as of now.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in the recently held budget session in March had announced the formation of a committee to provide Maratha Kunbi or Kunbi Maratha certificate to Marathas in Marathwada region.
The cabinet sub-committee on Maratha reservation held its meeting on April 18 where the decision to form a committee under Additional Chief Secretary (Revenue) was taken.
