The prime accused in the credit card fraud unearthed on Monday was a master at forgery by his own admission, say police adding he learnt the nuances of the “art” at a place outside Igatpuri station of which he learnt from a jail inmate.

Rajesh (Lucky) alias Raj Vijay Solaskar and seven others were arrested for allegedly collecting details of credit card holders and getting their phone numbers and addresses changed by telephoning the bank’s call centre. They would then pretend to have lost the credit card and request the bank to issue a new one in the owner’s name.

“The card was delivered at the address given by the accused and Solaskar would acquire fake documents to be produced at the time of delivery. He had visited a place outside Igatpuri station, where fake documents are sold. He claimed when he was in jail in 2008 for a fraud involving Rs 1.2 crore,an inmate had tipped him off about the place. He visited the place to acquire fake documents,” said assistant police inspector S N Bhandge,Powai police.

Solaskar would forge them to make them look original. “He had purchased a used license that may have been misplaced or expired, from Igatpuri, and then forged it in a woman accomplice’s name. He dipped the license in tea leaves to dissolve information written in ink on the licence. After remove the name and identity,he wrote the woman’s name and address. He also made a photograph of the woman, looked used and torn and pasted it on the licence…,” said Bhandge. The fraud came into light when the accused procured a credit card in the name of Delhi resident Kumud Khanna and made purchases. On May 13,after Khanna complained, police prevented a transaction of Rs 80,000. The police traced phones purchased by the accused from Dombivli and nabbed them. They are now on the lookout for a woman who posed as Khanna.
